I have a Bachelors in Social Work from San Francisco State and an MFA in Creative Writing from Mills College. My creative and professional attention has always centered an intersection of political engagement and aesthetic experimentation. I like thinking through impossible problems both collectively and through writing. I’ve published three books of my own, the most recent of which, Total Recall (Krupskaya, 2019) won the California Book Award Gold Medal for Poetry.

In my freelance work, I offer many services: developmental and copy editing; grantwriting for artists and arts organizations, ghostwriting, creative coaching and small-group creative writing workshops.

As an editor, teacher and writing coach, I am interested in bringing your creative work to its best possible realization. I like working collaboratively and honestly, providing necessary critique and resources to help you generate the work that reflects your unique vision. I’ve helped authors working in a variety of genres: poetry, creative non-fiction and fiction.

As a grantwriter, I’ve spent the bulk of my career curating and executing mission-driven programs in a variety of environments, negotiating the complex puzzle of needs that foster community-engaged art projects. I have served populations with a range of ages and issues including houselessness and incarceration, as well as emotional, behavioral, and substance abuse challenges. I enjoy working with communities and individuals that support the underlying belief that access to art, regardless of socio-economic, experiential and/or academic status, saves lives. While most of my work as an arts administrator has been, at some level, in conversation with diverse communities, I am equally excited to work with individual artists who make space for the interesting, difficult and beautiful rendering of art in civic life.

I have a PhD in Comparative Literature from UC Berkeley, where I studied German philosophy & English literature in addition to Latin & ancient Greek. My academic fields of interest include Classics, philosophy, architecture, & urban & new media studies.

In my freelance work, I offer many services around researching, writing, & reading, as well as curriculum design, development & implementation, particularly regarding issues of literacy & critical thinking across the K-12 range.

In my research, I bring the meticulousness & respect for history that Classics as a field demands to all of my clients. Whether the project is broad or narrow in scope, I am committed to clear & factual research practices & results.

As a writer, I have worked on many different projects from ghostwriting to structuring, researching & coaching others’ writing. From building a book from the ground up with a client to coming in as an outside reader of a completed text, I have worked on projects at many different stages in many different genres & fields. With my BA work on Ovid’s Metamorphoses & my doctoral research including the British imperial novel as well as historical moments from the early Internet, I have a strong training in narrative structures & practices both ancient & new. Whether the work is critical or fictional (or both!), organization, thematic through-lines, & constant engagement with the reader are some of the key features of a successful text.

In curriculum development, I have worked with students from first grade through undergraduate, & at institutions from a continuation high school to UC Berkeley. I am passionate about issues of literacy & critical thinking for all age groups of all backgrounds, both in the classroom & one-on-one.

In addition, believing in a project’s current relevance & importance have drawn me to work not limited to labor history, social justice movements & activism, as well as political theory. I look forward to getting the book within onto the page or fine-tuning the book already written!
